There is a lot of assumptions in this article, I like the idea but in my opinion the AGI thing is stricly combines with willingness to find the place in which these automation will be really useful. It was relatively straight forward in autonomus cars, its more blurry in AGI thing. I see it like Einsteins approach to describe everything with one equation, then quantim physics appears. Hopefully we are at the beginning of a really interesting journey, and we have impact of how itll look like 🤗

I think one important factor that's often left out of conversations like this is the perspective of change. For people who work in technology like you and I (and Andrej), change is fundamental, and learning, at least to some degree, is required to stay relevant. Learning also seems to come more naturally. However, for the person who's driven a taxi for the last 20 years, I don't think it's fair to assume the same is true.

I'll use a real-world example that comes from my personal life.

My father and brother drove for a living (one UPS, one a forklift). Both are capable of learning and changing, but it's at a slower pace, and it's often met with anxiety or fear as opposed to excitement and fun as some of us may view it. Based on the questions they ask (what happens if..., what will we do when..., etc.), you can tell there's a high degree of uncertainty. Oddly enough, I think a lot of white-collar folks are starting to ponder the same questions after the introduction of generative AI in the last year.

I'm a huge fan of Andrej and love his commitment to the community. However, I think his position of being a leader in the technology replacing these jobs makes it difficult for people like my brother and father to feel secure in his explanation of AGI. Ultimately, I think there's going to need to be a balance of policy and government to ensure people can still find meaningful work and be productive members of society. It would also be great if we, as a global population, could put a clearer definition on AGI so it's less likely to get confused with The Terminator. I do think Andrej's example here is a great starting point.
