Registration, step-by-step
|
| 34 |
+
|
| 35 |
+
ℹ️ Set up your online student record
|
| 36 |
+
|
| 37 |
+
Once your place at the University has been confirmed, you will receive a welcome email titled 'Set up your University account to get started,' which directs you to your registration portal, where you will be asked to create your online student record account. You'll receive your username and a link to reset your password to something memorable. Don't forget to make a note of your password, as you'll need it to complete registration and access your learning materials.
|
| 38 |
+
|
| 39 |
+
Suppose you are a returning student on a new programme of study. In that case, you will continue to use the same username and password you already have. Click here if you've forgotten your login details.
|
| 40 |
+
|
| 41 |
+
ℹ️ Login to your student record and access online registration (stage 1)
|
| 42 |
+
|
| 43 |
+
Once you've set up your student account, you can then complete the first part of the process, online registration.
|
| 44 |
+
|
| 45 |
+
Log in to your student record at www.studentrecord.herts.ac.uk
|
| 46 |
+
|
| 47 |
+
To begin online registration, you will need your username and password, which you set up after receiving your welcome email.
|
| 48 |
+
|
| 49 |
+
ℹ️ Click on 'Registration (Stage 1)'
|
| 50 |
+
|
| 51 |
+
If you are within 40 days of the start of your course, once you have logged into your student record, you should see a link to 'Registration (Stage 1)' under the services heading.
|
| 52 |
+
|
| 53 |
+
If you can't see this link, please get in touch with us for assistance.
|
| 54 |
+
|
| 55 |
+
⚠️ Please note that you will not be able to log into your Student Record unless you are within a 40-day window ahead of your course start date.
|
| 56 |
+
|
| 57 |
+
ℹ️ Check your programme information
|
| 58 |
+
|
| 59 |
+
All of the information on the 'Course Information' page is automatically completed from your record. Check your course title, and if anything appears incorrect, contact Ask Herts for assistance. Don't worry about the programme's start and end dates, as they may not be exact.
|
| 60 |
+
|
| 61 |
+
ℹ️ Enter your address details
|
| 62 |
+
|
| 63 |
+
We now need you to confirm your address, which you'll need to keep up to date during your studies. Please ensure that you complete your full address details (including postcode), as this is essential for your safety and will ensure that any important documents we send you are delivered to the correct address.
|
| 64 |
+
|
| 65 |
+
Home Address -This is where you usually live outside of term time. For international students, this will not be in the UK. Please note the postcode lookup will only work for UK addresses.
|
| 66 |
+
|
| 67 |
+
⚠️ If you live abroad, please enter your postcode/zipcode in the last line of the address fields.
|
| 68 |
+
|
| 69 |
+
Term Address -This is where you are living while you are studying with us. If you're learning on campus, this will be in the UK. Please provide an exact address. If you are living in University accommodation, your full address (including your Flat name, Flat number and Room number) will be provided in the emails we have sent you.
|
| 70 |
+
|
| 71 |
+
⚠️ If you are living overseas (e.g. if you're on a distance learning course), please enter your postcode/zipcode on the last line of the address fields.
|
| 72 |
+
|
| 73 |
+
Mailing Address -This is the address we will use when we send you any important letters. This won't happen often, but it's essential that we have an accurate address so you don't miss any important communications. If you provide your term address, you'll need to update it on your student record if you move.
|
| 74 |
+
|
| 75 |
+
Work Address: This field only needs to be completed if you are studying a programme directly linked to an employer, such as a degree apprenticeship.
|
| 76 |
+
|
| 77 |
+
ℹ️ Enter details of an emergency contact
|
| 78 |
+
|
| 79 |
+
Please provide us with the details of a person, preferably within the UK, whom we can contact in the event of an emergency. This can be any family member or friend, as long as we're able to get in touch with them if needed.
|
| 80 |
+
|
| 81 |
+
ℹ️ Answer our HESA questions
|

You must pay the amount required by the fee liability date.

|
| 24 |
+
|
| 25 |
+

|

| 31 |
+
Please follow the steps listed under 'Complete your Registration'.
|
| 32 |

Once we are satisfied that you have met the criteria for completing your registration, your student record will be marked as ready to register. The earliest you could become a fully registered student is 40 days before the start date of your course. Once you are a fully registered student of the University of Hertfordshire, you will incur any applicable tuition fees in line with the University's Fees and Finance Policy. The University will then notify Student Finance England (SFE) (or the relevant awarding body) of your registration.

If this is taking an unusually long time (more than a couple of days), please verify that you have provided all necessary documents and that you do not have any outstanding email requests for further documentation. If you believe you should be registered but your student record has not been updated, please get in touch with us.

University External Examiners
|
| 131 |
+
|
| 132 |
+
The role of the External Examiner
|
| 133 |
+
|
| 134 |
+
In the UK higher education system, Universities are responsible for the academic standards of the awards they offer and for the quality of the education they provide to enable students to meet those standards. The role of the external examiner is a crucial component of the University’s quality assurance processes. They essentially externally ‘audit’ the programmes to which they are appointed, in terms of the attainment of academic standards and the quality of the education.
|
| 135 |
+
|
| 136 |
+
The University of Hertfordshire appoints external examiners mainly from other Universities, but also from industry and/or the professions. They are qualified and experienced in the subject, have an understanding of the academic standards required for the award and are also independent of the University of Hertfordshire. As such, they can provide carefully considered advice on the educational standards of the programmes and/or modules to which they have been appointed, and can offer advice on good practice and how to enhance the quality of those programmes/modules. They are also able to provide an informed view of how standards compare with those of the same or similar awards at other UK universities with which they have experience.
|
| 137 |
+
|
| 138 |
+
It is essential to note that, while external examiners are full members of the Boards of Examiners to which they are appointed, the decisions of the Board represent the collective, consensus views of all its members.
|
| 139 |
+
|
| 140 |
+
Another important feature of external examining in the UK is the provision of annual written reports to the University, based on what they have observed of the institution's assessment processes and the sample of student work that they have seen. These reports provide invaluable independent feedback to the University at module and/or programme level.
|
| 141 |
+
|
| 142 |
+
The University of Hertfordshire recognises the importance of students in the management of academic standards and quality. External examiners' reports are therefore made available to student representatives as part of the programme monitoring process. If you are not a student representative and would like to request a copy of the External Examiners’ reports relating to your programme, then please [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]), stating your ID number, the full title of your programme and your current year/level.
|
| 143 |
+
|
| 144 |
+
A list of external examiners, by subject area, is also available [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]). Please note that contacting external examiners regarding any aspect of your programme of study is prohibited. The University has appropriate internal mechanisms in place if you wish to raise a concern using the complaints or appeals procedures, as applicable (links below):

|
| 63 |
+
|
| 64 |
+
During the application process, you will be asked if you would like to select your room. If you choose this option, you will be able to view which rooms are available for your choice.
|
| 65 |

|
| 75 |
+
|
| 76 |
+
If you're applying as a group, the Group Leader should initiate the application on behalf of the group. The rest of the group will then automatically receive an 'Invitation to Apply' email containing further information on how to join a group.
|
| 77 |
+
|
| 78 |
+
Please do not apply before receiving this email, as you will block the entire group.
|
| 79 |
+
|
| 80 |
+
Remember, if any of your group members are on a course that starts teaching early, e.g., Nursing, please ensure the group leader is also on an early course so that your group is offered accommodation for the correct dates. Suppose the group leader has a standard course start date. In that case, the whole group will be provided rooms from 20/09/25, and rooms may not be available earlier.
|
| 81 |
+
|
| 82 |
+
Your application will be subject to a debt and disciplinary checking process both at the time of application and if you receive an offer of accommodation at various times throughout the year until you occupy the room(s).
|
| 83 |
+
|
| 84 |
+
If you or any group members have outstanding debts, you may not be able to complete the booking for the whole group. Please ensure that everyone has cleared any outstanding monies owed to the University before the Group Leader applies for accommodation.

What is an eVisa?
|
| 25 |
+
|
| 26 |
+
An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK.
|
| 27 |
+
|
| 28 |
+
You will need to create a UKVI account (https://www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa) to access your eVisa. You do not need to apply for a new visa unless you need a visa extension.
|
| 29 |
+
|
| 30 |
+
Updating your physical document to an eVisa does not affect your immigration status or the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. In the future, you'll be able to use an eVisa to travel to the UK – you will not need to carry a physical document, except for your current passport, which must be registered to your UKVI account.
|
| 31 |
+
|
| 32 |
+
Until the end of 2024, you will need to continue carrying your physical document when you travel if you have one. You should retain your bodily documents, including expired BRP cards, for future visa applications for the UK.
|
| 33 |
+
|
| 34 |
+
The benefits of eVisas include:
|
| 35 |
+
|
| 36 |
+
They are secure and cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with, unlike physical documents.
|
| 37 |
+
|
| 38 |
+
You will not need to wait for or collect a physical document after your application is decided. However, you may still be required to provide biometric information in person, and UKVI will notify you if this is necessary.
|
| 39 |
+
|
| 40 |
+
It will be quicker and easier to prove your status at the UK border and share your status with third parties, such as employers and landlords.
|
| 41 |
+
|
| 42 |
+
You can watch a video (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/what-is-an-evisa-video)on what an eVisa is.
|
| 43 |
+
|
| 44 |
+
Why do you need a UKVI account?
|
| 45 |
+
|
| 46 |
+
UKVI are replacing physical documents with an online record of your immigration status. You need to create a UKVI account to access your eVisa and share information about your immigration status and conditions, such as your right to work or rent in the UK, using the view and prove service (https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status).
|
| 47 |
+
|
| 48 |
+
You do not have to pay to create a UKVI account. You can watch a video (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/how-to-create-a-ukvi-account-and-access-your-evisa-video)on how to create a UKVI account and access your eVisa.
|
| 49 |
+
|
| 50 |
+
Here is a step-by-step guide (https://vimeo.com/1041952763)to creating your UKVI account.
|
| 51 |
+
|
| 52 |
+
How will you use your UKVI account?
|
| 53 |
+
|
| 54 |
+
Once you have created your UKVI account, you will be able to view the details of your visa online, including your type of permission, the expiration date, and your conditions of stay in the UK. You can update your personal information (https://www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details) in your UKVI account, such as your contact details, new passport, and photo if your appearance has changed.
|
| 55 |
+
|
| 56 |
+
Your visa will be linked to your passport in your UKVI account. You must keep your passport or ID card (https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control/before-you-leave-for-the-uk) details up to date in your UKVI account so that your immigration status can be easily verified at the UK border. You'll still need to carry your current passport with you.
|
| 57 |
+
|
| 58 |
+
You can share your immigration status information with third parties, such as employers, landlords or the University* by generating a share code in view and prove service (https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status), which will give them time-limited access to your immigration status information. You can obtain a new share code whenever you need one – you don't have to remember a single unique code to prove your status.

| 72 |

How do you get an eVisa and a UKVI account?
|
| 73 |
+
|
| 74 |
+
If you have a biometric residence permit
|
| 75 |
+
|
| 76 |
+
Suppose you have a biometric residence permit (BRP) that expires on 31 December 2024. In that case, you can now create a UKVI account (https://www.gov.uk/get-access-evisa)and access your eVisa. You should do this before the expiry date of your BRP.
|
| 77 |
+
|
| 78 |
+
You can use your travel document, such as a passport or visa application reference number, to create your UKVI account if you have lost your BRP card.
|
| 79 |
+
|
| 80 |
+
You should only request a replacement BRP if it has been lost or stolen and you have no other form of identity document to create a UKVI account.
|
| 81 |
+
|
| 82 |
+
If you've permission to stay in the UK, once you've created your UKVI account, you will be able to sign in to the view and prove service (https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status) to access your eVisa.
|
| 83 |
+
|
| 84 |
+
**PLEASE NOTE: ** If you cannot see your eVisa details as soon as you create your UKVI account, no action is required. UKVI will contact you directly by email once your eVisa is available to view. You can use your BRP to prove your immigration status until your eVisa details are available.
|
| 85 |
+
|
| 86 |
+
If you have another physical document
|
| 87 |
+
|
| 88 |
+
Suppose you have Indefinite Leave to Enter or Indefinite Leave to Remain (also known as settlement). You currently prove your rights through a different type of physical document, such as a wet-ink stamp in your passport or a vignette sticker. In that case, you should make a 'no time limit' (NTL) application (https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence-permits/replace-visa-brp). If your NTL application is successful, you'll receive an eVisa and be instructed on how to access it in your decision email or letter. You can continue to prove your rights using your existing physical documents where permitted while your no-time-limit (NTL) application is being considered and after it has been decided. This includes confirming your immigration status, right to work or rent, or for travel to the UK.
|
| 89 |
+
|
| 90 |
+
If you are settled in the UK and do not have a document to prove your right to stay in the UK
|
| 91 |
+
|
| 92 |
+
Suppose you or your parent were settled in the UK on 1 January 1973, or you arrived in the UK before the end of 1988. In that case, you should check if you are eligible to apply for evidence of your status under the Windrush Scheme (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/windrush-scheme).
|
| 93 |
+
|
| 94 |
+
If you have a biometric residence card
|
| 95 |
+
|
| 96 |
+
Suppose you have a Biometric Residence Card (BRC) and have been granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme. In that case, you already have an eVisa and do not need to take any action to obtain one. You can find details of how to access and use your eVisa (your digital status) in your grant letter or email. You should continue to carry your BRC with you when you travel internationally. If you have a BRC and you have not been granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme, have not obtained another form of immigration leave, or have not become a British citizen. Your BRC is no longer valid, even if it appears to still be in date. This is because the UK has left the EU, and the EU free movement law no longer applies.
|
| 97 |
+
|
| 98 |
+
To continue living in the UK, you should get an immigration status as soon as possible. You may be able to make a late application to the EU Settlement Scheme (https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families/applying-for-settled-status)as a family member of a relevant EU, other EEA or Swiss citizen. Do not travel internationally until you have obtained proof of your immigration status.
|
| 99 |
+
|
| 100 |
+
If you need to make a new visa application
|
| 101 |
+
|
| 102 |
+
Suppose you need to make a new visa application for permission to stay in the UK. In that case, you should follow the usual application process. During your application process, you will receive information and guidance on how to create a UKVI account if needed.
|
| 103 |
+
|
| 104 |
+
If you need help
|
| 105 |
+
|
| 106 |
+
Use the UKVI account contact form (https://www.ask-about-getting-access-evisa.homeoffice.gov.uk/start)or online chat (https://ukimmigration-support-webchat.homeoffice.gov.uk/evisa?utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=2&_hsenc=p2ANqtz--E8w6hMBXkqnPHCGfRtkiDlokKDV-xeCZKZdlFvvbd6rAObI7_fbaWB9jsR14gssgugx71JPKO6PgmnDol2ah3W-8Qew&_hsmi=2)if you need help with creating your UKVI account and getting access to your eVisa.

Reporting a problem with an eVisa
|
| 111 |
+
|
| 112 |
+
Suppose you notice any error with your eVisa, such as with your name, photograph or an incorrect status. In that case, you can use the online service to report it and request the error be corrected :https://www.gov.uk/report-error-evisa (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/eYNrCgxwBc0DN7AIEtAF4a0Jh?domain=gov.uk).
|
| 113 |
+
|
| 114 |
+
People without ID who have an account created by the Home Office can also use this service to update their email address and mobile number.

Fire Safety for Off-Campus Accommodation
|
| 5 |
+
|
| 6 |
+
Moving into off-campus accommodation is an exciting experience, and Students usually have a lot to plan and organise with workloads and social events. It's essential to remember to stay safe within your property and to remain fire safety conscious.
|
| 7 |
+
|
| 8 |
+
Many fires reported to the Fire Services are caused by cooking appliances. Never leave cooking pans or grills unattended. Also, use a fire blanket only on a chip pan fire, and never an extinguisher.
|
| 9 |
+
|
| 10 |
+
If you smoke, never smoke in bed or while tired. Make sure cigarettes are fully stubbed out.
|
| 11 |
+
|
| 12 |
+
Never overload plug sockets with too many appliances.
|
| 13 |
+
|
| 14 |
+
There should always be fully working smoke detectors in all accommodations. If this is not the case for your property, please get in touch with your Landlord.
|
| 15 |
+
|
| 16 |
+
Read more safety information here (https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/475164/Fire-Safety-in-the-Home.pdf).
|
| 17 |
+
|
| 18 |
+
If a fire starts, call the Fire Service (http://www.fireservice.co.uk/safety) on 999 and provide as much information as possible, such as the address, the potential cause, and whether anyone else is inside the building.
|
| 19 |
+
|
| 20 |
+
Never put yourself at risk.

|
| 6 |
+
The Graduate Visa (GV) route is now open.
|
| 7 |
+
|
| 8 |
+
The Government has published Appendix Graduate (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-appendix-graduate) in the Immigration Rules, along with the Graduate Caseworker Guidance. (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/graduate-caseworker-guidance)
|
| 9 |
+
|
| 10 |
+
Before you apply, work through the University's guidance below to help you identify whether or not you qualify. You'll also find details about applying, working while holding a GV, and what happens when it expires.

⚠️ Be sure you know the risks of applying too early!
|
| 27 |
+
|
| 28 |
+
Not all graduates are eligible to apply for a Graduate Visa, and requirements are complex and highly specific for those who qualify. It's essential to understand that applying too soon could result in a permanent visa refusal being recorded on your file, so please read this information thoroughly before applying.
|
| 29 |
+
|
| 30 |
+
❌ No, you can not apply for a Graduate Visa if:
|
| 31 |
+
|
| 32 |
+
You have a Chevening Scholarship.
|
| 33 |
+
|
| 34 |
+
You have previously been on a Doctorate Extension Scheme, or you have already held a Graduate Visa.
|
| 35 |
+
|
| 36 |
+
You owe a debt to the University (../../../graduate-visa-post-study-work-faqs#unidebt)

✅ You *maybe* able to apply for a Graduate Visa:
|
| 41 |
+
|
| 42 |
+
Before you apply, review the checklist below to ensure you have the best chance of a successful application.
|
| 43 |
+
|
| 44 |
+
Do you hold a qualifying visa?
|
| 45 |
+
|
| 46 |
+
Have you completed a qualifying course?
|
| 47 |
+
|
| 48 |
+
Have you met the time-bound provisions (course duration and graduation date)?
|
| 49 |
+
|
| 50 |
+
Have you only made allowable changes to your programme?
|
| 51 |
+
|
| 52 |
+
Has all travel you've taken outside the UK been within the rules?
|
| 53 |
+
|
| 54 |
+
Do you hold a qualifying visa?
|
| 55 |
+
|
| 56 |
+
You must have a valid Student/Tier 4 visa at the time of application; you cannot apply if your visa has expired. Learn what to do if your visa expires before the Exam Board sits (../../../graduate-visa-post-study-work-faqs#expirebeforeboard).
|
| 57 |
+
|
| 58 |
+
You are also eligible to apply if you are on a part-time Student/Tier 4 visa or if you are a Students' Union Sabbatical Officer with Student/Tier 4 leave to remain. No other visa types will be eligible to apply.
|
| 59 |
+
|
| 60 |
+
Have you completed a qualifying course?
|
| 61 |
+
|
| 62 |
+
Only Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctorate level degrees are fully eligible; however, if you are awarded a lower award classification, e.g. a postgraduate diploma or certificate, your programme must fall under one of the relevant qualifications listed below for you to apply:
|
| 63 |
+
|
| 64 |
+
A law conversion course validated by the Joint Academic Stage Board in England and Wales or
|
| 65 |
+
|
| 66 |
+
the Legal Practice Course in England and Wales, the Solicitors Course in Northern Ireland, or a Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in Scotland, or
|
| 67 |
+
|
| 68 |
+
the Bar Practice Course in England and Wales, or the Bar Course in Northern Ireland, or
|
| 69 |
+
|
| 70 |
+
a foundation programme in Medicine or Dentistry or
|
| 71 |
+
|
| 72 |
+
a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE); or
|
| 73 |
+
|
| 74 |
+
A professional course requiring study at a UK bachelor's degree level or above in a profession with reserved activities that are regulated by UK law or UK public authority (please note that UKVI has confirmed to the University that OSPAP falls under this definition).

+
|
| 78 |
+
Have you met the time-bound provisions (course duration and graduation date)?
|
| 79 |
+
|
| 80 |
+
You must have studied in the UK for a minimum period with a Student or Tier 4 visa to be eligible. If your course lasted 12 months or less, you must have spent the entire time studying in the UK on a Student/Tier 4 visa. If your course lasted longer than 12 months, you must have spent at least 12 months of study in the UK on a Student/Tier 4 visa. If you've studied overseas, these time-bound criteria still apply.
|
| 81 |
+
|
| 82 |
+
Any eligible student who graduates on or after 1st July 2021 can apply if they still have a valid Student/Tier 4 visa at the point of application. Eligibility is based on when you complete your studies, not when you started them.
|
| 83 |
+
|
| 84 |
+
You cannot qualify to apply based on a previous programme of study. You must have gained the eligible qualification during your most recent grant of Student/Tier 4 leave to remain.
|
| 85 |
+
|
| 86 |
+
If you complete your studies more than 2 weeks before the end date on your CAS, your visa sponsorship will be stopped, and your visa will be subject to cancellation. Learn what happens when you have been reported as an early completer. (../../../graduate-visa-post-study-work-faqs#noticeearlycompleter)

|

+
|
| 90 |
+
Have you only made allowable changes to your programme?
|
| 91 |
+
|
| 92 |
+
Your final award must be the one that was listed on the CAS you used to obtain your current Student/Tier 4 visa; however, some changes are potentially allowable:
|
| 93 |
+
|
| 94 |
+
Suppose you've added an integral and assessed work placement or permitted study abroad programme. In that case, you should still be able to meet the qualification requirements.
|
| 95 |
+
|
| 96 |
+
If you changed your course, you are still eligible to apply if you were allowed to transfer without needing to apply for further permission on the Student/Tier 4 route.
|
| 97 |
+
|
| 98 |
+
Suppose you are a placement student who switched to the Advanced Research Route without needing to apply for further immigration permission. In that case, you are still eligible to apply for the Graduate Visa.
|
| 99 |
+
|
| 100 |
+
Suppose you are a placement student who switched to the one-year programme without needing to apply for further immigration permission. In that case, you are still eligible to apply for the Graduate Visa.
|
| 101 |
+
|
| 102 |
+
If you choose to switch to the one-year route, the University is required to notify UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI). Once you have completed your studies and have received your award, your visa will be curtailed (shortened), as you will no longer need the additional year on your visa. You should then make plans to leave the UK or change to another immigration category (e.g. the Graduate Visa) if eligible to do so.
|
| 103 |
+
|
| 104 |
+
Unfortunately, the University cannot confirm eligibility.

What you can do if you aren't eligible for a Graduate Visa
|
| 119 |
+
|
| 120 |
+
Other types of visas allow you to work in the UK. Please visit the UKCISA website (https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/information--advice/working/working-after-studies)for further details.
|
| 121 |
+
|
| 122 |
+
You may also consider the option of further study in the UK. You can then apply for a Graduate Visa after completing a different eligible course.

+
Stage 2: When and how to apply for a Graduate Visa
|
| 125 |
+
|
| 126 |
+
You must apply for your Graduate Visa before your current student visa expires; however, to minimise risk, you should not apply until:
|
| 127 |
+
|
| 128 |
+
You have been notified that you've completed and successfully passed your eligible course;
|
| 129 |
+
|
| 130 |
+
We have 'locked' your final award on your student record (this takes place after the Exam Board sits);
|
| 131 |
+
|
| 132 |
+
The University has confirmed to the Home Office via their secure portal that you have successfully passed.
|
| 133 |
+
|
| 134 |
+
⚠️ Some circumstances require you to make a more rapid decision, which can incur some risk:
|
| 135 |
+
|
| 136 |
+
If the following situations apply to you, you can learn more about your options in our FAQ (../../../graduate-visa-post-study-work-faqs). Please review the available information first and contact the Student Immigration Team (Advice) if you require further assistance.

How to apply
|
| 145 |
+
|
| 146 |
+
Applications must be made online (https://www.gov.uk/graduate-visa) from within the UK, and you must still hold valid Student or Tier 4 leave at the time of application.
|
| 147 |
+
|
| 148 |
+
Application financial requirements and verifying your identity
|
| 149 |
+
|
| 150 |
+
You will need to pay an application fee of £880, along with the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £1,035 per year. Degree students will, therefore, need to pay £2,070 for the IHS. PhD students will need to pay £3,105 for the IHS.
|
| 151 |
+
|
| 152 |
+
Suppose you were financially sponsored (all your tuition fees and maintenance) for your studies by a government or an international scholarship agency. In that case, you will need your financial sponsor's consent to stay in the UK under this route.
|
| 153 |
+
|
| 154 |
+
You are responsible for ensuring that you have adequate funds to support yourself while looking for work, as there will be no access to public funds. There is no other financial requirement for you to meet.
|
| 155 |
+
|
| 156 |
+
You will be required to submit your biometrics as part of the application process. The fee will vary depending on when and where you submit these. In addition, all applicants will be subject to identity, criminality and security checks.
|
| 157 |
+
|
| 158 |
+
|
| 159 |
+
What else you'll need for your application
|
| 160 |
+
|
| 161 |
+
See the FAQ for details of the information you'll need to gather to submit your application (../../../graduate-visa-post-study-work-faqs#needforapplication).
|
| 162 |
+
|
| 163 |
+
How long will it take to process the application?
|
| 164 |
+
|
| 165 |
+
You can expect a decision within eight weeks. Still, as with all visa applications, you should not make any plans to leave the UK until a decision has been made and you have received your BRP / Digital status.
|
| 166 |
+
|
| 167 |
+
|
| 168 |
+
Can I work full-time while my application is being decided?
|
| 169 |
+
|
| 170 |
+
Once you have submitted your Graduate Visa application, you may start working full-time (this can be a permanent full-time vacancy). However, you must still wait for the decision on your GV application if you are planning to work as an entertainer or you plan to be self-employed.
|
| 171 |
+
|
| 172 |
+
The Immigration Rules permit you to fill a permanent full-time vacancy according to Appendix Student (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/appendix-student)(paragraph ST 26.6). Employers may not be aware of this rule, and your right to work share code will not explain this rule to them. You may need to explain this particular allowance to a prospective employer.

Living away from home and in shared accommodation can be a challenging experience. You may find that your neighbours are noisy, not cleaning the kitchen, not taking out the rubbish, feel homesick, or something might break in the middle of the night. Alternatively, you might be concerned about the welfare of another housemate.

Student Immigration Team (Advice)
|
| 5 |
+
|
| 6 |
+
We are the University's first point of contact for any immigration questions and concerns.
|
| 7 |
+
|
| 8 |
+
⚠️The rules relating to immigration and visas are complicated and are subject to change. Students and staff must receive accurate advice; therefore, always refer immigration matters to the Student Immigration Advisers.

|
| 10 |
+
Learn why this is so essential.
|
| 11 |
+
|
| 12 |

If you require support with linking your eVisa to your UKVI account, please visit the ASK Hutton Hub and ask for the Student Immigration Team. A member will be available to assist you.

Drop-in sessions
|
| 31 |

|
| 32 |
+
During drop-in sessions, you do not need an appointment to see an adviser; log in to the kiosk and obtain a ticket. Please note that although we try to keep waiting times to a minimum, this is not always possible due to the complexity of immigration enquiries.
|
| 33 |
+
|
| 34 |
+
Please be aware that we have a duty as a sponsor to ensure our students are compliant with their responsibilities. Therefore, we are required to escalate and report to UKVI any information you disclose that could be viewed as a breach of your visa conditions.
|
| 35 |

|
| 36 |

You can contact us via telephone 01707 284800 or by [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])if you are unable to make the drop-in, and we will endeavour to answer your questions.

Student Immigration Advisers are only permitted to offer immigration advice within their areas of competence. There are certain areas, including asylum and settlement, where they are unable to provide any immigration guidance. If you have an urgent immigration question, then advice and information are available from other sources:
|
| 63 |

The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) (http://www.jcwi.org.uk/)
|
| 65 |

UKCISA – UK Council for International Student Affairs (http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/)- UKCISA is an excellent source of information for international students. Their student advice line is open Monday, 1 pm - 4 pm, 020 7788 9214

If you do need to speak to a lawyer about immigration matters, make sure that they are immigration specialists regulated by the Law Society (http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/choosingandusing/findasolicitor.law).
|
| 69 |

|
| 70 |
+
Law Centres (http://www.lawcentres.org.uk/)provide independent specialist legal advice, assistance and representation services on a variety of welfare law issues. Not all Law Centres specialise in immigration law, so check first. The Luton Law Centre (https://www.lutonlawcentre.org.uk/immmigration/) can offer immigration advice.

Immigration advice in the UK is regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/immigration-advice-authority)(IAA). The Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 made it unlawful for anyone to provide unregulated immigration advice or immigration services.
|
| 75 |

|
| 76 |

The Student Immigration Advisers, part of the Student Immigration Team (Advice), are specifically trained to provide immigration advice and guidance to staff and students, as per IAA regulations.

Guidelines for the provision of immigration advice within the University of Hertfordshire can be found in Appendix A (https://ask-herts-production.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/l6u84g0w0lu6gp60aoe7hg4f4yaz#file_id=1683)

Private Off-Campus Accommodation - End of Tenancy: Moving-Out Checklist
|
| 5 |
+
|
| 6 |
+
As the academic year draws to a close, it is essential that those of you living in privately rented accommodation off-campus read the following Moving Out Checklist:
|
| 7 |
+
|
| 8 |
+
1. Confirm with your Landlord or Letting Agent in advance (approximately two months) whether you want to renew or terminate your Tenancy contract.
|
| 9 |
+
|
| 10 |
+
2. Sort through your belongings and throw out or recycle any items you no longer want or need. Websites like Freecycle or eBay can help you shift items and clear a space.
|
| 11 |
+
|
| 12 |
+
3. Start packing belongings a couple of weeks in advance – most of us have more items than we realise. Do not wait until the last minute, as this will result in a frenzied panic.
|
| 13 |
+
|
| 14 |
+
4. Arrange the redirection of your mail and the change of address. Don’t forget:

5. Start cleaning the property (your room and communal areas) one month before leaving. This will give you less to clean when you leave the property for the last time.
|
| 39 |
+
|
| 40 |
+
6. Schedule a final inspection and completion of final inventory with your Landlord or Letting Agent.
|
| 41 |
+
|
| 42 |
+
7. On your final day, take photos of your room and communal areas. This will act as valid evidence in future, if required.
|
| 43 |
+
|
| 44 |
+
8. Take photos of final meter readings for gas, electric and water.
|
| 45 |
+
|
| 46 |

9. At the end of your Tenancy Contract, send a written notice to your Landlord/Letting Agent requesting the release of your deposit. If there are any disputes regarding charges deemed unfair or unreasonable, raise a dispute with the deposit protection scheme as soon as possible. Please note that there is a deadline for submitting a dispute claim, so please act promptly.

Title: Applying to Study Abroad | Ask Herts | University of Hertfordshire

Applying to Study Abroad
|
| 5 |
+
|
| 6 |
+
Application Procedure Flow Chart
|
| 7 |
+
|
| 8 |
+
Complete the online application form.
|
| 9 |
+
|
| 10 |
+
The online application portal can be found on the Study Abroad site on Studynet, link: link:https://herts.instructure.com/courses/95007 (https://herts.instructure.com/courses/95007). Your Programme Leader must sign the Research form (found on Studynet) to give their approval of your application.
|
| 11 |
+
|
| 12 |
+
The online application portal will be open until 9th February 2025 for the 2025-26 academic year.
|
| 13 |
+
|
| 14 |
+
Applications are sorted by preferred partner (first choice) and ranked based on a weighted average of available academic results. Places are allocated at each partner university based on these results and the number of places available at the partner university.
|
| 15 |
+
|
| 16 |
+
If it is not possible to offer you a place at your first choice, then your second and third choices will be considered.
|
| 17 |
+
|
| 18 |
+
You will be notified to which partner university you have been allocated, and a nomination will be sent to that partner on your behalf. You will be nominated for one of your choices.
|
| 19 |
+
|
| 20 |
+
If you decide to proceed (and are accepted), you will be sent application details (online or paper-based) for you to make a direct application to the partner.
|
| 21 |
+
|
| 22 |
+
You are required to attend a pre-departure meeting, scheduled for April. An email invitation will be sent closer to the time with more information.
|
| 23 |
+
|
| 24 |
+
During the pre-departure meeting, the Study Abroad Office will provide further information about your time abroad, and there will be an opportunity to meet with fellow students going to the same partner universities as yourself.
|
| 25 |
+
|
| 26 |
+
You must complete a Learning Agreement, listing the modules that you propose to take whilst studying abroad in conjunction with your Programme Leader. The learning agreement must include a sufficient number of modules or courses, totalling 60 UH credits per semester.
|
| 27 |
+
|
| 28 |
+
You need to make an appointment with your Programme Leader to agree on your programme of study. In addition, if taking a Replacement Year, you must supply the Programme Leader with module information so that they can confirm that you will be following a matched programme.
|
| 29 |
+
|
| 30 |
+
In addition, if taking a Replacement Year, your School Associate Dean (Academic Quality Assurance) or nominee must countersign the Learning Agreement.
|
| 31 |
+
|
| 32 |
+
It's the students' responsibility to ensure that they are taking sufficient credits at the partner university, which is usually expected of a full-time student at that university.
|
| 33 |
+
|
| 34 |
+
Once the Study Abroad Office receives offer letters or confirmation from the partner university, you will be contacted when they arrive. You will need these documents to apply for a visa. Students are responsible for researching and applying for their Visas after receiving their offer letter from the partner university.
|
| 35 |
+
|
| 36 |
+
You are advised not to make travel plans until you have met both academic and school requirements and obtained permission from the school to travel.
|
| 37 |
+
|
| 38 |
+
You must satisfy the progression rules within your school, which may require achieving a specific grade point average. Module failure may prevent you from taking up study abroad, as well as any outstanding payments, at the time of application.
|
| 39 |
+
|
| 40 |
+
When you arrive at your host university, you must ask the study abroad coordinator to sign and stamp your Confirmation of Arrival Form and countersign your Learning Agreement.

Important: If you are a staff member who is also a student, or if you use a shared computer, such as one you share with your family, please note the following.
|
| 37 |
+
|
| 38 |
+
StudyNet uses your Office 365 login, which may be remembered between sessions.
|
| 39 |

It is essential that you log out of your account (My Account -> Logout) and then close your web browser. Otherwise, Office 365 might remember your login details.

Suppose you have two University accounts. Always log out. If you have a non-UH Office 365 account and a UH Office 365 account, we recommend using separate web browsers for each account or using 'Private Browsing' for one of the accounts. Help with Canvas
|
| 63 |

|
| 64 |

What if my modules are incorrect on Canvas?
|
| 65 |
+
|
| 66 |
+
Your modules are updated automatically from your Student Record (../../../your-student-record). If your module is missing in Canvas, check your Student Record to ensure you are registered for the module. If your Student Record is incorrect, please get in touch with the Ask Herts service (../../../ask-herts-your-questions-answered-online-on-campus).
|
| 67 |
+
|
| 68 |
+
If you have a module listed on your Student Record that is not visible in Canvas, please allow two working days for the link to appear. If a link is still missing, this is usually for one of two reasons:
|
| 69 |
+
|
| 70 |
+
The module is a Semester B module, and we have not yet created a website for it. Don't worry. We create Semester B modules nearer the start of Semester B.
|
| 71 |
+
|
| 72 |
+
The other common reason is that your module might be what is known as a 'linked module'. This is where the module runs under several different module codes on other programmes of study, but is timetabled together. Often, the Module Leader will decide to link the modules together and teach you as one cohort. If you see a module with a similar title that is not on your Student Record, it is most likely a linked module. Check the module's homepage, where your tutor will hopefully have identified all the modules using the website.
