License Compatibility

Hi , I’d like to report a License Conflict in
TheBloke/Platypus2-70B-GPTQ. I noticed that this quantized model was derived from garage-bAInd/Platypus2-70B , which is released under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 License.

From what I can see, TheBloke/Platypus2-70B-GPTQ is published under the LLaMA 2 Community License, which appears to be incompatible with the original license — especially in terms of redistribution, commercial use, and sublicensing.

⚠️ Key Violations of CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0:

Section – NonCommercial:
  • May not be used for commercial purposes of any kind

Section – ShareAlike:
  • Derivatives must be licensed under identical terms (i.e. CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0)

Section – No Sublicensing:
  • Cannot be re-released under a more permissive or incompatible license

By contrast, the LLaMA 2 Community License:

  • Allows commercial use (subject to Meta’s terms)
  • Allows sublicensing/redistribution under the same LLaMA license
  • Does not require ShareAlike or NonCommercial propagation

This results in a license conflict because:

The upstream license forbids commercial use, while LLaMA 2 allows it
The downstream model is not licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA, violating the ShareAlike clause
LLaMA 2 terms do not enforce the NC/SA restrictions required by the original license

🔹 Suggestions for Resolving

1. To align with the original CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, it would be helpful to:
  • Change the license declaration from LLaMA 2 to CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0, or
  • Add a clear notice in the README or model card that this is a derivative of
garage-bAInd/Platypus2-70B and is subject to NonCommercial and ShareAlike terms
2. Consider removing commercial-enabling tags or terms from the model card to avoid misleading downstream users into believing broader usage is allowed.

Let me know if I misunderstood anything — happy to help clarify further!

Thanks for your attention!

Looking forward to your response!
