Excessive newlines (after 1-6 characters)

Recommended command-line works, but output has incorrect formatting:
-ngl has no effect on it. Am I missing something?
P.S. Appending "do not add excessive newlines" to the end of the prompt slightly helps, but I would like to find and fix the root cause.
