Inside the effort to tally AI’s energy appetite
Artificial intelligence has increased its presence in almost every aspect of our lives and its energy appetite can’t be ignored either. To tackle this fast-growing problem, many researchers are collaborating to understand its energy requirements.
Chatbots, which are AI-powered applications that can provide instant information or perform basic tasks for users, consume energy each time we interact with them. With more and more people leaning on chatbots daily, this consumption is contributing to the growing demand for electricity. Understanding how much energy is used when we engage a chatbot for a simple task will help us allocate resources better.
Collaborating researchers believe that calculating the energy used in each interaction can help us better comprehend the overall energy requirements associated with AI-powered applications. For instance, researchers at the Center for Sustainable Computing have been working on this issue, estimating how much energy each interaction requires to deliver the desired results. The results of such calculations can be used to identify areas where energy consumption is higher and thus suggest strategies to reduce it.
AI technology advancements like machine learning and deep learning are shaping the future of almost every major industry, ranging from healthcare and automotive to marketing and finance. But all these advancements fail to arrive without a price – a huge energy appetite. According to a recent report, AI systems generate nearly 100 million metric tons of CO2 each year, which is equivalent to the emissions from Greece.
Therefore, while embracing the applications of artificial intelligence, we need to consider and analyze the energy consumption associated with them. By doing so, we can pledge to lower the carbon footprint and set a course towards a more sustainable future.
