'The opportunities are immense': Novo Nordisk signs up to use Danish supercomputer - Fierce Biotech
hospitals across the UK are set to benefit from the use of an AI-powered supercomputer optimized for healthcare, after leading global pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk chose to use the Danish supercomputer to drive product innovation and healthcare services holistically.
The world's largest pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk, has signed up to use the enormous Odin supercomputer, designed and housed at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby just outside Copenhagen. This marks a new era for the firm and follows a strategic partnership between UK universities and the Danish firm to jointly drive product innovation and healthcare services.
The Odin supercomputer boasts an unparalleled processing power of up to 13.6 petaflops and has 1.5 petabytes of storage. Novo Nordisk's utilization of the supercomputer aims to leverage AI innovation in the field of medicine by accessing the unstructured data on its new in-house medical devices. With more 13,400 employees worldwide, Novo Nordisk is optimistic about the opportunities this new management system will bring in terms of clinical data management, treatment planning, and healthcare research and development.
"We are working very closely with other similar institutions, and there are many such partners across the UK too," said Prof. Sandy Dougan from the University of Cambridge. "Everyone in the industry is looking at how we can use this kind of technology on a larger scale."
The use of the Danish supercomputer by Novo Nordisk marks a ground-breaking shift in the attitudes towards using AI technology in healthcare. The healthcare industry is now embracing the use of powerful supercomputers to drive medical research and transform patient outcomes.
